Hands Touching Hearts Across the Water

HFO-10On April 26th, hearts were touched at a private fundraising event for Heart for Orphans.  As the sun set on the beautiful James River, over 120 guests gathered in Charles City at the lovely waterfront home of Patsy and Gerry Swecker to learn more about the Williamsburg ministry that helps orphan teens in Ukraine.

“These teens,” said Heart for Orphans founder Nancy Hathaway, “have aged out of orphanages and have no place to go…no home, no family. They end up on the streets and often turn to a life of drugs, crime, prostitution, and some are even lured into sex trafficking.” Her solution to this ever-increasing problem is the establishment of transition homes, which offer stability, and a sense of belonging. Currently, we have six homes in operation in Ukraine where house parent’s love and teach these older youth life skills and what it means to be part of a family.  As to the current situation in Ukraine, Nancy said the feeling throughout the country was one of fear and uncertainty, but one of hope brought on by prayer. Our homes and kids, she said, are safe and out of harms way.

HTH croppedGuests enjoyed a feast catered by Steve Flanary, to include grilled oysters in the shell to mouth-watering tenderloin and cheese grits to decadent strawberries dipped in dark chocolate to his very own creation of the Flan Bar.  Prior to sitting down to dinner in the tent, guests mingled on the lawn while listening to the Limelight Jazz Quartet and enjoying wine from the Williamsburg Winery.

Master of Ceremony Tim Hinz engaged the group in a silent to live auction of three items donated by MidAtlantic Enterprises Inc., Southwest Airlines and Phil and Carol Comstock. After the auction and the Ask, which was made by Board Treasurer, Steve de Mik, more than $38,000 was raised at the event for ministry operations. After all was said and done the organization raised over $40,000.

Hands Touching Hearts Across the Water was the idea of Patsy Swecker, Penny Sain, Angela Luina and Susie Northrop. The team hopes this event will be the start of something new and exciting.
